After 48 years of writing (35+ nonfiction books, 7 fiction, and nearly 600 articles) I’ve concluded that there are only three elements: clarity, brevity, and style, in that order. Most newbies (and some oldies!) want to concentrate on Style but they’ll do far better to state things clearly and succinctly early on.
